My name is Matthew Heatherly. Fall 2017 semester marks my final semester as a student in the Strategic Communications MA program in The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University. This site is used to showcase work and projects from my time in the program and will be continually updated until graduation. For more on the WSU program, visit the Online MA Strategic Communication website, and as always, GO COUGS!
I was born in Puyallup, WA. I served in the US Army for 20 years including two tours as a medic in Iraq. I had a lot of fun and by the time I retired in 2010, I had lots of good stories and even better friends. One story occurred while I was in Iraq for my first tour. I had been looking into the Army PA program and had to retake my SATs. They brought a lady in to Iraq for those of us who needed various testing. I took my SAT test while wearing a bullet proof vest with an M16 strapped to my back. In the middle of one of the sections, we had incoming mortars and had to pause the test while we all ran for the bunkers. Quite a bit different than when I took them in high school.
I work for the US Army now as a civilian. I really enjoy my job and the chance to be around some of the best American society has to offer. I have been married for 26 years (we got married at 19 on a four day pass from training for Desert Storm) to my wife Holly. We have two children, Nathaniel (who suffers from Tourette’s Syndrome but is one of the most confident kids I know) and Aaron (who has had cleft palate, cleft lip and scoliosis but is such a fun loving kid). I have a BA in Social Sciences and a MA in Criminal Justice. Both degrees are from WSU. During the few free minutes I get for myself, I enjoy reading biographies and running.
